Tuxedomoon - Desire

Tuxedomoon are a San Francisco based experimental act formed in 1977. They are still quite a prolific and active band, still releasing records and touring today. However, their late 70's/early 80's records form part of Ralph Records' amazing roster of weird bands - and are a complete pleasure to listen to. This is my favourite of theirs, Desire.

Non-stop erotic cabaret, new wave in spirit and kind of velvet in mood, Tuxedomoon deliver the perfect soundtrack to living vicariously through the eyes of someone just like you, but cooler, more seductive and possibly far more perverse. Live a thousand lives via pictures.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light

They need no introduction, neither does this album I suppose. Unique, extremely idiosyncratic new wave/art funk gods, Talking Heads formed in NYC in 1975, released at least 4 albums that are stone cold classics and for me, stand as amongst the top 5 or 6 bands America has ever produced.

A band at the peak of their powers. Unparalleled songwriting, Brian Eno on production duties. I don't normally generalise but it's probably safe to say that white people never got funkier than this. One of the best albums ever.

New Order - Substance

New Order formed in 1980 after Ian Curtis' suicide which effectively ended Joy Division. Over the years, they would solidify themselves as one of the most successful and influential bands of all time, marrying their post punk beginnings with the upcoming synthpop and alternative dance cultures. This is their singles collection titled Substance; probably the best singles collection I have in my near exhaustive library.

Life affirming euphoric pop music. Just timeless by all means, has about 5 of the best songs of the 80's here.

The The - Soul Mining

The The are an English musical and multimedia group that have been active in various forms since 1979, with singer/songwriter Matt Johnson being the only constant band member. Their debut, Soul Mining stands tall as a new wave masterpiece with really tight songwriting. Lyrically, it is otherworldly, you have to hear this to believe it. 

" All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind
Another year older and what have I done

Blinded by science
I've been waiting for tomorrow all of my life."
